Mexican Hot Chocolate

I have to say I have two favorite combinations that involve chocolate, chocolate/orange and chocolate/cinnamon. Have you ever tried Mexican Hot Chocolate? This recipe is courtesy of Tyler Florence from my favorite channel of all, Food Network and is sure to keep you warm on those cold winter nights. :)

Ingredients:

3 ounces (tablet or cone) Mexican chocolate or bittersweet chocolate
3 cups milk
2 tablespoons sugar
Pinch salt
Miniature marshmallows or a dollop of whip cream, for serving
6 cinnamon sticks (preferably Mexican canela), for serving

Directions:

Using a sharp knife, break up the chocolate into smaller pieces. In a saucepan, combine the chopped chocolate, milk, sugar, and salt over medium-low flame. Heat and stir until the chocolate is completely melted and milk is very hot, but not boiling, about 10 minutes.
Remove from the heat and froth the chocolate milk with a mini whisk. Divide the hot chocolate among big mugs, top each with a few marshmallows, and serve with the cinnamon sticks as stirrers.

Yum! I love hot chocolate but for some reason I never make it at home. I'll have to try this.

Oh yes! We will try this! We always enjoy cocoa when the tree goes up. I've just put cinnamon sticks on my list, as I know I am out. Thanks for the GREAT recipe. Yummy! : D

My favorite part of all is frothing the milk! To the extent that I won't drink any milk unless it is frothed!;-)

Yummy, yummy....there is just nothing like a cup of hot chocolate when in need of comfort and warmth. Unfortunately, I crave it the most at nightime and I cannot have it due to the caffeine....it keeps me awake. Thanks for the recipe.

I always wanted to try Mexican Hot Chocolate. Thanks for the recipe.
I think my favorite hot chocolate is by Marie Belle have you tried it? I think it's best with whipped cream and a little bit of cinnamon and nutmeg on the top.

I love hot cocoa more than anything. But I'm now lactose intolerant so I only drink an organic hot cocoa from Trader Joes that I mix into hot milk and a spoonful of nondairy creamer.

This sounds just perfect! I still have some decorating to do, and this will help warm me (and my helper!) up just right. Thanks so much for sharing the recipe, you have such a wonderful blog, I have really enjoyed reading your posts!

Sounds good but I am too lazy to go to all the trouble. I'd rather tear open a pouch and mix with water lol

Hey Andrea,

I know what you mean. I have made it a few times at home and it really is sometimes worth it! :)

Hey Debbie,

Grab some cinnamon sticks for me while you're out. I need more but I'm too lazy to go to the store. ;)

Hey Duckie!

I'll need to make myself some of this cocoa while reading your stories. It will make the experience all that much sweeter!

Hi Soulchocolate girl!

If you can believe this, I'm too lazy to froth milk. I'd rather just put a dollop of whip cream in my cocoa and sprinkle with cinnamon. :)

Monica!

That Ghiradelli cocoa is to DIE FOR!! It's the best cocoa I've tasted in a container! Let me know what you think. :)

Hey Serenity!

I'm lucky, not even two cups of coffee will keep me from sleeping. I have no problems going out for the night. It's my favorite thing to do! :)

Hey Elaine,

I've never even heard of Marie Belle hot chocolate. I am definitely going to have to look that up! :)

Fairmaiden,

Wow, so sorry you're lactose intolerant! I wouldn't know what to do without my milk or ice cream. :)

Hey FrenchGarden,

Thank you so much for visiting!! You have a MUCH better blog than me. I'm going to have to go shopping there sometime soon to decorate my new place. :)

Carol,

Thanks for stopping by! I think you can ONLY have hot chocolate in a big mug. Well big enough to fit all the marshmallows in too. :)

Alice!

You take much better pictures of your food than I do. :)

Melody,

Okay, I admit most of the time I open a pouch too. :)

That looks decadent. Frank said he looked for Mexican chocolate at the grocery store and didn't find it... we'll try other stores and will eventually find it.
