Seriously, Was Housework Fun Back Then?

Sometimes I look at these pictures and think, wow, life was so simple back then. I mean look, they were even happy doing housework. I want to live in a life like that. I want to be happy all the time. Then, as I browsed through all these pictures I had to start chuckling. :)

I know what they're really thinking....

Husband: Well.....it's better than the last meal but I still can't figure out what it is, dear.

Wife: You'll eat it and like it or else I made arrangements at the motel down the street just for you and the dog stays here.
Hmmm.....now let's see what this knob does. It turns...and I smell gas. Oh well, it must be working. All that matters is that I look good in my new apron.

Hehe....hehehe.....no really, this is a genuine smile but if I can help it this will be the last time I clean up after those muddy brats! Be good kids or else mommy is going to call the adoption agency to have you all collected.

Tada! Look! I did it! I did it! I did it! I got all those white things into the basket. Now what do I do?

Now this is more like it. This is how we really look when we have to do housework, right girls? Actually, who the heck wears a dress and shoes like this doing housework?

I don't think I will ever enjoy it and I've gotta do it before Saturday's get together. UGH!

What a wondeful sense of humor you have- wata great post! Yes- I always loved the spotless clothes and pearls while doing housework and cooking. No wonder martinis were popular back then! Have a great day~

That is hilarious! I've just finished a massive spring clean (company coming today for 3 weeks) and I can promise you that I didn't look that well put together or happy while doing. Though I did partake in several after cleaning martinis :-)

You make me laugh!:) I love your added commentary and think it fits perfectly. I always wondered who cleaned in a dress, pearls, high heels and smiled.. must have lived in Stepford!

Aren't you so glad we have vacuum cleaners, clothes dryers and dishwashers though? I can't imagine how those poor ladies did it all!

Just how did you get those gals to say exactly what the picture was saying. You're good! Growing up, I wanted Robert Young, of Father Know's Best to be my Dad. The mother on that show, was always dressed to kill. I hate housework. Hugs, Kathleen

Where do you find these great graphics?

I remember Mama wearing dresses doing housework. No shoe though :-)

I have lots of cleaning that needs doing... can you come?

You are such a riot, dear! I don't enjoy housework, but I enjoy dirty floors and toilets even less, so I put up with having to do it. I figure at least dh does the cooking and gardening so I'm a pretty lucky gal and shouldn't complain too much about my share of the housework. :}

michelle, that was too funny. today we had an unexpected guest who was to arrive shortly which required me speeding home, admonishing the good husband for not cleaning his messy areas, and working like a dog so the house could look half way decent. then the guests sat on the back porch!!! the good husband laughed and said 'well, the house looks good anyway!' uggggg!!! grrrrr!

They do look beautiful don't they? I wear skirts when I clean, but not heals, never heals...I'm a long flowing skirt, birkenstock girl...I do wear aprons, white one's like in 'No Reservations'...I bet you love that movie. I decided long ago that I might as well feel pretty while I do my cottage~keeping because then I will enjoy it more. I always have pretty music playing too.
And I often think of the maid in 'Pride and Prejudice' humming beautifully when bringing them their dresses and such while they are getting ready for the ball. I want to be cheerful like her.

That is a great post. I love those old pictures, they crack me up because I make up funny stories for them too. I don't think women were any happier doing housework back then as we are now! Very funny!
